The general conception is that fungal infected-and –degenerated nails, and loose nails, are the same thing. And that both these conditions are caused by fungi. The fact is, however, that loose nails and fungal-infected nails are NOT at all the same thing.

All they have in common is that both are unsightly and leave damage to the nail behind. The nail bed may begin to form a granular layer of abnormal cells on its surface. Not all loose nails are fungal infected but a Loose nail can be the forerunner of a fungus-infected nail. Where this happens, treating only the fungus, will not restore the damage it caused. A loose nail without a fungus is still loose and needs to regrow.

How do nail problems develop?

There are about 70 different nail conditions. Loose nails (Onycholysis) are only one of them and by itself has about 80 different causes such as psoriasis, porphyria, bacterial and virus infections, iron deficiency, diabetes, thyroid, and more. It can also be caused by certain drugs such as certain antibiotics, oral contraceptives, sedatives, and anti-cancer treatments.

Separation from the nail bed usually starts spontaneously from minor trauma to the nail, from aggressive pedicure, contact with irritants, or excessive exposure to water. The trauma need not always be extreme for the nail to become loose. Slight yet repetitive trauma, such as jogging, extended periods of walking or hiking, or any endurance sport and even tight-fitting shoes, can also be a cause of loose toenails.

Loose Nails

A nail is loose when the nail plate becomes separated from the nail bed, which then becomes dry. This results in the growing nail plate simply overshooting the dry nail bed. Separation usually starts at the front, outer or loose edge of the nail and progresses inwards, with the sides of the nail remaining attached to the nail bed.

Nail Fungus

Toenail fungus is more common than fungus under fingernails. The reason being that warm, sweaty feet in shoes are unable to breathe and this creates the perfect breeding place for nail fungus. A fungal infection in the nails can be very contagious and will eventually infect both fingernails and toenails.

Deteriorated Nails

Along with other toenail fungus symptoms, the nail’s deterioration is the inevitable consequence of neglecting loose and/or fungal infected nails. Onychomycosis, nail fungus infection, is mostly caused by Trichophyton rubrum, contagious fungal infection of the nail; if not stopped it destroys the nail.
